New decisions to improve your life, especially a healthier lifestyle, coincide with the start of the New Year. Here are five practical health tips to help you start your journey to a healthier lifestyle in 2022.
1. Be active
Physical activity is defined as any physical movement that requires energy and is performed by the skeletal muscles. This includes exercise and activities at work, play, housework, travel, and leisure activities. The amount of physical activity required varies by age group, but adults ages 18-64 should engage in moderate physical activity for at least 150 minutes per week. For additional health benefits, increase your moderate-intensity physical activity to 300 minutes per week.

2. Check your blood pressure regularly
High blood pressure, often referred to as hypertension, is known to be the silent killer. This is because many people with high blood pressure may not be aware of their condition because they have no symptoms. Hypertension, if left unchecked, can lead to heart, brain, kidney, and other illnesses. Have a doctor check your blood pressure regularly so you know your statistics. If you have high blood pressure, talk to your doctor. This is important in the prevention and treatment of high blood pressure.
3. Get tested
Testing for HIV, hepatitis B, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and tuberculosis is an important first step in determining your health (TB). These disorders, if left untreated, can have serious consequences, including death. If you know your status, you can continue to prevent these diseases or, if successful, get the necessary care and treatment. To get tested, go to a public or private health center, whichever is more convenient for you.

4. Get vaccinated
Vaccination is one of the most effective methods of disease prevention. Vaccines work together with your body’s natural defenses to protect against diseases such as cervical cancer, cholera, diphtheria, hepatitis B, influenza, measles, mumps, pneumonia, polio, rabies, rubella, tetanus, typhoid, and yellow fever …
In the Philippines, children under one year of age receive vaccinations free of charge through the Department of Health’s routine immunization program. If you are a teenager or an adult, ask your doctor if you need to check your vaccination status or get vaccinated.
5. Cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing
Infectious diseases such as flu, pneumonia, and tuberculosis are transmitted through the air. Infectious agents can be transmitted to others through airborne droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. If you start to cough or sneeze, cover your mouth with a mask or tissue and dispose of it properly. If you cough or sneeze and don’t have a handkerchief on hand, cover your mouth as much as possible with the crook (or the inside) of your elbow.
