Healthy Lifestyle
Do you consider yourself a healthy person? Aside from getting lost from time to time, most of us believe that we do a good job of maintaining our health through excellent (or at least reasonable) eating habits and physical activity when we can. But is that enough to be considered “healthy”?
According to a recent study, only a small percentage of people meet the criteria for a healthy lifestyle. According to a study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, only 3% of Americans scored perfectly on all four major criteria for a healthy lifestyle. Only 13.8% met three criteria and 34.2% only two. The women were a touch ahead of the men.
The good news is that all but one of these behaviors are part of a weight loss clinic, so you should be familiar with them. Items 2-4 are the pillars of the WLC program, habits we regularly discuss, write about, and support.
Everyone is aware that smoking is harmful to one’s health. Pat yourself on the back if you were one of the lucky ones who never developed a nicotine addiction. Smokers, I hope you are doing your best to quit smoking. The importance of a smoke-free lifestyle to your own health and the health of those around you cannot be overstated.
While these four behaviors are undoubtedly vital to a healthy lifestyle, others may argue that there are other aspects to consider as well. What would you add to your wish list?
Out of curiosity, I’ve compiled my own list of the top 6 healthy behaviors (in addition to the top 4) that contribute to overall wellness and lifestyle satisfaction:
- Floss your teeth and gums daily to keep them healthy and pain-free.
- Make sure you sleep well. Those who get enough sleep not only cope better with stress but also better control their appetite. Sleep deprivation has been shown to throw our “hunger hormones” out of balance, potentially leading to overeating.
- Eat regularly with your family. This helps parents be good role models, encourages healthier eating habits, and creates an environment conducive to an active discussion. Communication with family and/or friends is an important element of a healthy lifestyle.
- Smile and laugh out loud several times a day. It helps you stay grounded and deal with events that would otherwise drive you crazy. To evoke these happy feelings, read comics, watch sitcoms, or tell jokes.
- Devote at least 10-20 minutes each day to meditation, prayer, or seeking comfort. Contemplation is good for the soul, helps to cope with everyday stress and can even help lower blood pressure.
- Get a pedometer and use it to motivate yourself to walk, walk, and walk. Forget how many minutes of activity you need; Instead, do your best to increase the number of steps you walk each day. Physical activity, no matter how you get it, can help you relax, burn calories, and boost your self-esteem.
