Scientists say tea and coffee reduce the risk of stroke and post-stroke dementia

Drinkers of strong tea and coffee are less likely to face dangerous age-related diseases.

Good news

Scientists and nutritionists for many years have not been able to reach a consensus about the benefits or harms of tea and coffee. Some say that the caffeine in their composition is very harmful to the heart and blood vessels, others claim that the best drinks to restore vitality cannot be found.

Recently, Chinese scientists have found an undeniable reason to rehabilitate coffee and tea. During the experiments, they found that their regular use helps reduce the risk of stroke and senile dementia.

Health in a cup of tea

To reach this conclusion, the authors of the study examined data from the largest British biobank. In total, the medical records of 365,682 people, who were from 50 to 74 years old from 2006 to 2010, were carefully read. Next, scientists compared them with the health indicators of the same people in 2020. It turned out that in general, all participants were healthy at the beginning of the observation, but then 5,079 participants developed senile dementia, and 10,053 people suffered at least one stroke.

direct connection

The authors tried to identify the relationship between the frequency of strokes and the development of dementia with the consumption of drinks containing caffeine. And it turned out that she really is. It turned out that drinking even one cup of tea or coffee a day reduces the risk of developing these diseases.

But a more stable (read – long-term) protective effect is obtained by drinking two to three cups of coffee and two to three cups of tea daily. With this combination, scientists noted a 32 percent reduction in the risk of stroke and a 28 percent reduction in dementia.

Those who drank an average of four to six cups of tea and coffee daily also showed better health and reduced risk of stroke. It is noteworthy that among people who have already had a stroke, scientists have recorded a lower risk of developing post-stroke dementia in those who regularly consumed coffee, especially latte.
