The relationship between human growth and the risk of developing certain diseases has been studied by scientists for a long time. scientists from the Virginia Regional Medical Center in the United States cited the new data: according to the study, high or low growth can affect the risks of developing diseases of various kinds.
can a person’s height increase the risk of certain diseases?
Experts have long linked growth and diseases ranging from heart disease to cancer. Previously, scientists have tried to determine whether the risk is actually growth or whether the factors that influence this growth – are nutrition and living standards. For the new work, the researchers planned to remove these confounding factors and explore the associations between actual height and the presence of pathologies, as well as the associations between diseases and predicted height, adjusted for genetics.
With the help of a special program, where genetic information was also loaded, they analyzed the data of more than 200,000 white adults and more than 50,000 black adults.

The experimental data confirmed the previous conclusions. It turns out that high growth is associated with a higher risk of atrial fibrillation, and varicose veins. But at the same time, they have a lower risk of developing coronary heart disease, hypertension, and high cholesterol. In addition, the researchers saw new links with a higher risk of peripheral neuropathy, which results from nerve damage in the hands and feet, and skin and bone infections, such as foot ulcers.
This study examined over 1,000 conditions, making it the largest study on growth and disease. But at the same time, as experts note, additional work is required, since there are still many questions.
